Miyazaki Sabou Organically Grown Japanese Oolong Hojicha
This is not a typical hojicha. Miyazaki Ryo takes organic oolong tea (leaves and stems, lightly oxidized) and roasts it, creating something that sits between two worlds. The amber liquor has the toasty warmth you'd expect from hojicha, but there's a floral sweetness underneath and a jasmine-like fragrance. It's smooth, very low in caffeine, and gains even more sweetness on the second steep.
Miyazaki runs Miyazaki Sabou, a family tea farm at 600 meters elevation in Gokase, in the mountains of northern Miyazaki Prefecture. His family switched to organic farming in 1983 and has since won some of Japan's highest honors, including the Emperor's Cup. He's known for experimentation, and this hojicha is a good example.
JAS organic certified. 2025 harvest.
